In the middle of the gorgeous countryside of Jaen, at Vilches, is El Anadio, a nineteenth century house complete with bull farm and horses. Now a welcoming small hotel and restaurant, it is a delightful place to stay. The location is between the Sierras de Cazorla Natural Park, Segura and Sierra Morena – land perfect for exploring on foot, by horse or in a 4x4. Livestock farming and horses dominate the conversation at the hotel, and all sorts of equestrian activities are possible here. At this country estate, there is also a pleasant swimming pool in the grounds and an excellent restaurant which serves traditional fare (approx. 20 euros). The décor of the rooms is warm, solid and inviting, with rock walls, wood floors, white linens and full modern bathrooms. There is a comfortable lounge with a huge fireplace – perfect for relaxing with a book in cold weather. The location of the estate is isolated and quiet.

Amazing place once we had negotiated the 7 km unmade road. Very friendly owner who unfortunately did not speak one word of English but we managed to communicate in French, broken Spanish and a bit of Italian. She gave us a guided tour around the property which is a bull-rearing ranch - fascinating. We were offered drinks by a memberf of staff whilst we were at the swimming pool which is surrounded by comfortable loungers and umbrellas. The views are stunning. The rooms were extremely comfortable and well appointed with comfy beds and well equipped bathrooms. There was air conditioning as well as a ceiling fan. The owner came out after dinner when we were sitting on the terrace, saw me struggling with my Iphone and offered me the use of her laptop - that enabled me to keep in touch with friends and family - a great touch. She offered us a ride in a 4 x 4 the next day to see the "Torros" (bulls). Hoorah we had freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast.
Didn't Like:
Unfortunately the food let it down. We were expecting a delicious dinner - instead we were served warm tuna and beans which resembled cat food and was extremely unpleasant. This was followed by slices of pork loin covered in a kind of jus with mashed potato. Unfortunately the whole dish was stone cold. The dessert was a bowl of warm melon - galia and watermelon. The wine however was reasonable and local and we drank two bottles in order to make up for the dinner. The breakfast was slightly better although it was odd to be served coffee in a teapot. Also the swimming pool - although in a gorgeous setting needed cleaning - we did it ourselves!!!
