The property of San Martin dates back over a thousand years, having once belonged to the Abbot of San Victoria, the oldest monastery in Spain (the ruins are located nearby). The current stone structure was begun in the 18th century and has recently been sensitively restored to a delightful, comfortable, rustic hotel. The property sits on 180 acres and is surrounded by pine and oak forests. On the two upper floors of the main house there are eight bedrooms, each with its own modern, spacious bathroom. In a converted stable attached to the main building there are a further two bedrooms, each with ensuite bathroom and private entrance. The rooms have underfloor heating, hairdryer in the bathroom, telephone and stereo and each is differently decorated in warm tones with comfortable furniture; all have spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and two have south-facing private terraces. On the first floor is the dining room with open fireplace (cuisine is regional), and a reading corner -- perfect relaxation for cold days. On the second floor is a lounge with fireplace and satellite television. The friendly staff will help you plan outdoor activities

We enjoyed every minute of our stay. The accomodation was superb, the welcome was very warm and the food was fantastic.
Didn't Like:
The only thing that would have made the hotel even better would have been a pool or hot tub. For English visitors who find the 5 km drive up an unmade road a bit of a worry a sign at the main road indicating 'Casa de San Martin this way' would have been reassuring that we were on the right road.

Everything was excellent! The rooms, the meals, the hospitality, the hotel, the views... David was an exceptional host. We would highly recommend Casa de San Martin to anyone traveling to Spain. Be sure to hike up to the abandoned village and explore the history and views.

Nothing! Everything was amazing! Just have a little patience as you wind your way up the dirt road to the hotel.

If there were a rating beyond excellent, I would have selected it. My husband and I concluded that, after years of travel, it is the best place we have ever stayed. The property is beautiful in every way -- the attention to interior and exterior detail was extraordinary. The sleeping room was wonderfully comfortable and the bathroom roomy. The proprietor, Mario, could not have been more welcoming and helpful as was the gentleman that helped us with our luggage and served our meals. The breakfast and dinners were delicious and beautifully presented. The setting is unbeatable -- perched atop a hill in the midst of a gorgeous mountain range with the sound of cowbells and birdsong to awaken you in the morning. What more could we want?
