At the foothills of the Sierra Espuña, a national park, in the village of Gebas, the original owners found the remains of an old farmstead. La Casa del Estanco, as it was known, was originally also a sales outlet for tobacco and groceries. It has now been skilfully converted into a small country hotel - Hospederia La Mariposa. The hospedería has five spacious double rooms, each equipped with a bathroom and ceiling fan. One of these rooms is suitable for disabled persons. There are also two double bedroomed apartments for two/four and a family suite of two rooms (maximum occupancy of 4). The rooms are built around a patio where you can enjoy a Mediterranean meal with a splendid view of the valley and the "Barrancos" of Gebas (four course menu del dia from approx. 10 euros). There is also a library and a common lounge, complete with a small bar, piano and fireplace. Throughout the house there is a permanent exhibition of paintings. Guests have access to a big garden with a wonderful view of the valley. On one of the terraces there is a swimming pool with a special children's playpool. The garden and swimming pool are also wheelchair accessible. The owners, Mark and Sam , will be happy to help you plan your excursions and make your stay relaxing.
Family Information
Booking for evening meals is essential at breakfast time or on arrival, this ensures that we get fresh meats and produce and saves us from using ANYTHING frozen.
Meal Information
Traditional mediterranean/Spanish food. (4 course menu del dia (at lunchtimes) from approx. 9 euros) . A La carte evening menu, Main courses from 7€ to 16€.
Notes
With the park entrance only 5 minutes away, La Mariposa is an ideal starting point for hiking and cycling tours. The owners will supply detailed maps and information about the specific flora and fauna of the nature reserve. The off-road driving in one of the hotel's Landrovers is an adventure. The 4WD-track leads through very high mountains and the beautiful surroundings of the Sierra Espuna. Beside courses on mountain climbing and parasailing, there are lots of possible excursions in the cultural department. For example, you can follow a vineyard route or visit the small villages near Gebas such as El Berro, high up in the Sierra Espuña or Aledo and Mula, where you may find examples of traditional art from the Murcia region.

Although we only stayed one night, we found the hotel extremely good. The welcome was very warm (especially given the late hour of our arrival), the accommodation very high quality and the setting lovely. We will definitely be going back.

We were warmly welcomed, and given very helpful advice about the locality. Only an overnight - but would have liked more time there. Would strongly recommend them.

Tom, the owner's son, was a VERY hospitable host and made our stay very special. He was our translator helping with a rental car problem we had. He knows the art of making things look easy. This mature youg man is probably not 20 years old and we predict a great life ahaed for him. The food was prepared by the substitute cook and was good with lots of variety. We wish we had more than one night to enjoy the beautiful scenery. ATV's are for rent, great looking pool, powerful telescope and spectacular views.

the bed comforters gave a shabby look to the room.

Very warm welcome and family hospitality. Rooms are very comfortable (as a party of 3 we shared a 'family option' with 2 large bed rooms and a shared bathroom). Location for exploring the Park and local villages is fantastic. Good value too and would definately go again. Lots of advice was on offer as to local activities.
Didn't Like:
Breakfast wasn't bad but we didn't really feel tempted to venture past a baguette for dinner. The menu was a bit uninspiring and we did see quite a lot of food left by other guests. My advice to our hosts, contract the menu and do a few things, ideally from seasonal ingredients, really well. Add a bit more 'Spanishness'.

Ideal for adventure breaks probably not best for an overnight stay. Accommodation cheap but good standard and value. Food price on high side we thought.

Very impressive location in the hills and relatively inexpensive place to stay. Having British family running the hotel obviously made communication easy for English speakers

Friendly staff especially the son -who went out of his way to make us very welcome.
Didn't Like:
No air conditioning in rooms which made it extremely hot and stuffy. The bed was also made up as a double with a thick blanket even though I had specifically requested twin beds. The bathroom had nowhere to put anything down like a shelf. The dinner was disappointing - a frozen piece of fish which we were told was local and came from Vietnam! The breakfast was also rather disappointing - very English with sliced bread to make toast from and why oh why do we have to have orange juice made from concentrate when Spain has literally millions of orange trees?

Bullas. get their early as there is much to see if you`re interested in wine making, but everything shuts down ay 1.30pm. Lots of different scenery
