Hacienda La Herriza, close to the town of Gaucin, is surrounded by magnificent mountain and valley views of the natural reserve park at Gaucin. There are seventeen small villas with 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms, 1 or 2 bathrooms and living room, all decorated in Andalusian style and with air conditioning, telephone and satellite t.v. There is a bar and restaurant in the complex and a swimming pool. The informal Restaurant-Grill El Hacho named after the main peak surrounding La Herriza, is well-knwo for its Mediterranean and regional food complemented with an excellent winelist. While you are relatively close to the the amenities of the Costa del Sol and Gibraltar, at more than 600 metres above sea level, you are far enough from the hustle and bustle of the mass tourist sites to enjoy a relaxing stay surrounded by natural beauty and clean, fresh air. There are many activities possible in the area, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, mountain biking. We have decided to include La Herriza on our site for those who are travelling with family or friends and need more spacious accommodation.

We did not make it to this hotel as the road was so very very bad we decided to turn back after about 18 miles (and over an hours travel) and found another place to stay. If the "main" road was so much worse than any others we have ever encountered (and many are difficult in the area and we are used to driving bad, dangerous roads in Cyprus), we dreaded to imagine how bad the last 6 miles or so on a much narrower road would be. The surface on the "main" (yellow) road was disgraceful, huge potholes etc. We had to go to the airport from there and there was no way we would have made our plane unless we set out about 7am to get to the airport ...then the dark would have made the journey even more hazardous for the car. Terrible!!!!

I would not recommend anyone without a very strong nerve and a very good head for heights even attempting to reach this hotel. it is disgraceful that stronger warnings are not clearly given about the inaccessibility of the village...and after the village the road becomes a grade down!!!! Damage due to bad potholes etc to the underneath of the hire car could have proved very expensive!!!”
