Besalu is a wonderful old town with a fortified bridge over the River Fluvia. Once the capital of Catalunya, the town is a medieval treasure with its narrow streets and old houses. It is in the centre of a triangle between Figueres, Olot and Girona and is over 150 metres above sea level. Els Jardins de la Martana is a simple, ten-roomed small hotel located just at the foot of the bridge to the ancient town (and close to the small municipal parking lot). The rooms are comfortable and spacious (and all have complete bathrooms). There is a friendly laid-back feel to this inn. The entrance is subtle - just a large doorway with a small sign, but after climbing the stairs to the reception area, the whole town is laid out in front of you, viewed over the River Fluvia. Four rooms have a balcony and there is a terrace where breakfast may be taken. Only breakfast is served but there are many restaurants just over the bridge (2 minutes walk). There is no swimming pool or other leisure activities so this is not a suitable venue for children. For those who like skiing in the winter there are a number of ski resorts close by. Note that there is a traffic bridge fairly close to the hotel so there can be some traffic noise at busy times.
Family Information
The family rooms accommodate up to 5 people.
Notes
See the Medieaval Fair in Besalu Fridays in July and August. Visit the massive Monastery of Sant Pere and the churches of Sant Vicenc and Santa Maria, from the 12th century. Cultural activities: Romanesque routes, Dali museum at Figueres, Prehistoric caves at Serinya, Volcanic area, forests, Medieval centre Santa Pau, old town of Girona. Beach 45 minutes, skiing 1 hour. Gastronomic and wine routes. The hotel does not have air conditioning but has fans for those rare times when it gets very hot. There is a parking lot in front of the building where the hotel is located. This can get quite busy as Besalu is a popular location, but in the evenings it is very quiet usually.

A bit worried at first glance (looks a little run down) but inside, a revelation. Really lovely rooms and friendly staff (with good English which made it easier for us). Great character, and now we see the outside as 'faded elegance'.

Great location. excellent staff. Nice room withair-con.

Very comfortable and very friendly.

An absolutely splendid place, I would certainly stay there again. A spot-on mix of position, view, service and facilities. There are not many small hotels with three different and interesting sitting rooms!

The host, and the huge Great Dane dog. Loved the setting and the views. There was a wedding on the property, that was cool, but should have perhaps got a chance to join them as they partied until 5:00 AM.
Didn't Like:
Parking was not great.... not much else. this 3 star place was better than one 5 star place we stayed at on the coast.

Lovely place with excellent staff

The hotel was a delight. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we steped through the door. Maria and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was large and comfortable and breakfast on the terrace was a real treat, especially as our orange juice was freshly squeezed by Maria herself. Besalu is a most interesting place to spend a couple of days and we would have no hesitation in recommending it and the hotel to anyone. We'd stay there again if in the area.

Wonderful experience in a fabulous setting

I think this hotel deserves a MUCH higher rating. The room was large and comfortable, the staff was very pleasant and helpful, the grounds were beautiful, and the location was excellent.

Nice laid-back attitude of staff, amazing setting and if/when we go back to the area there will no other place to stay.(That corner room overlooking the bridge- visual viagra)We have already sung your praises to the people we left Els Jardins to visit. So if you get a booking from a couple called Williams from Port Vendres...your magic has cast its web.

A very romantic venue and they served the most tasty natural breafast out of all the hotels we stayed in. A fantastic location. We loved it!

A very modest facility, but it was what we expected.
Rating: Good
Only problem was the lack of an elevator and the number of stairs to our room.

Comfortable and convenient hotel with great views of Besalu but looking a little tired and in need of some TLC.
Rating: Good
Hotel has not been very tastefully restored. Inside has plain plaster boards and has lost alot of the original features.

Liked:
Best room in the hotel we think (Room 1) - lovely balcony covered in wisteria, best possible view of the bridge over to Besalu. Welcoming staff.
Didn't Like:
Probably a little overpriced compared to other hotels we have stayed in through Inns of Spain. This would have been more so if we had stayed in a different room. The hotel could do with some redecoration. The outside was about to be painted - we returned to find scaffolding on our balcony so unable to use it for last couple of days.

Hotel in dire need of external restoration and/or decoration. Our first impression on arrival was to turn back and not check in. Once inside, however, decor not too bad. But breakfast left a lot to be desired. Service appalling and content of breakfast poor (apart from freshly-squeezed orange juice which obviously took up all their time). Hotel is in an excellent position with fantastic views of Besalu and only a short walk to the centre.
Rating: Poor
Grubby hotel in a corner of the municipal car park. Very poor breakfast. Left early and were charged more than the excellent parador.

Liked:
The room was fine - although the beds for our kids were unstable - and the various sitting rooms were attractive and intriguing.
Didn't Like:
The setting, the parking, the rather shabby common areas, the fact that the photos were deceptive (they portray an "entrance" that is closed off, the sense the evening we arrived that - to the extent the hotel was "staffed" - it wasn't really able to do much more than give us a key and point us to the room.
