This is Troglodyte accommodation (cuevas are caves) and is truly different. In prehistoric times the basin of Baza was filled by a huge blue lake and until forty years ago this savage and beautiful part of the province of Granada had just a few hamlets carved into the hills around the barren lands formed by the drying out of the old lake. Today, restored and enhanced, is one of these hamlets offering unique and interesting accommodation. There is a hammam offering all sorts of relaxing treatments and an excellent little restaurant offering Arab-Andalucian andf French dishes. The traditional Hammam is one of Baza's most unusual sights. It is constructed completely in a Troglodyte cave and inside there is a natural solarium, hot bath, warm room and cold baths, and a massage room. The caves have "natural" air conditioning maintaining a constant temperature of between 18-20 degrees throughout the year. The Al Jatib is a romantic place to stay and relax. The cave facilities are self-catering, with fully equipped kitchens, and include one or two bedrooms, a living room with fireplace, central heating, complete shower and toilet facilities, and a sun terrace. The larger caves are also suitable for families with children. There are discounts for stays of 3 or 6 days or more.

Notes
Follow in the footsteps of Ibn al-Jatib. This trail goes from Murcia to Granada, along the same path that in 1347 the great Andalucian historian took to the eastern frontiers of the Nazari Kingdom. Visit the Alhambra, the crystal clear waters of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park, the Sierra Nevada, the Museum of Orce, Negratin reservoir, town of Baza. Take the opportunity to see the immense desert in a 4x4. The regional airport is in Murcia.

The caves were unbelievable and the service and food excellent. We used this as a stop off between staying in the South and West of Spain and the children enjoyed it so much that they want to stay longer next year!

Novel but lovely little fully contained cave houses. Particularly a hit with our children (14 & 7 yrs). Fantastic food in the restaurant. Would recommend to everyone to sit outside and eat/drink watching the sunset. No English spoken by reception staff though.

Super concept, and excellent hosting. But it needs to be mentioned that it is not suitable even if you suffer from even a hint of claustrophobia.

The remoteness was lovely. The staff were very helpful even though no-one spoke any English although with our tiny bit of Spanish we managed. The cave rooms where very clean and really different. It was very quiet and peaceful and the restaurant, when open was excellent.
Didn't Like:
It was difficult to check in because of the language barrier and all the literature concerning the hotel rules were in Spanish so it was difficult to know if you broke any! A multi language sheet explaining the hotel's amenities, meal times etc. would be helpful. Some tourist information of the area would also assist foriegn visitors.

amazing architecture of rooms. WiFi worked well. We had a living room, terrace and sauna complex all to ourselves.Pool is nice and hamman is very cool in a series of narrow caves and passages.
Didn't Like:
only one other couple there. A bit too quiet in late July. Dining room was not open for dinner so we had to drive into dull and ugly Baza.

Very interesting place to stay; nice and comfortable temperature inside even though it was 35C outside. Children loved it.

It was a lovely cave house. There are two comments I would make. 1. It would be useful to have some small pieces of firewood available to light the fire in the evening. 2. It would be beneficial to have a letterbox somewhere outside the building where people needing to leave early can leave their keys. We needed to leave at 7.15am and there was no-one around, hence we had to leave them on the windowsill and hope someone found them. Otherwise, lovely location and the cave house was great. Thanks.

Heating and hot water need to be better for colder times of year.Electric heaters tripped fuses and water was only warm.

The hotel was very interesting and I greatly enjoyed staying in the caves.
Didn't Like:
It was difficult to communicate with the hotel staff over the phone as no one spoke any English and I do not speak any Spanish. Also, we arrived in the dark and it was difficult and disconcerting to find the place.
