The Bagues Hotel is a new luxury boutique hotel, part of the Gran Derby group, in just about the best location in Barcelona. Close to all the cultural and shopping areas, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Gran Teatre opera house, the cathedral and the Boqueria market - it was once the historic El Regulador palace. The group that owns the Bagues has done a masterful renovation and recreation of this beautiful old palace and has made it into a smart hotel while incorporating the historical artefacts (jewellery and art) throughout, making it a fascinating place to stay. The Jewel Suite on the sixth floor would be the perfect room for a honeymoon or anniversary celebration as it includes VIP services, solarium and jacuzzi and special artworks (including unique pieces from the Masriera Art Nouveau jewellery). There are also Deluxe and Superior rooms - and our favourite was a corner room looking out to the Ramblas and to a neighbouring church. The decor is sophisticated using deep greys and dark parquet floors with subtle lighting. Bathrooms are luxurious. El Regulador restaurant and bar is attached to the welcoming lobby and offers a casual atmosphere for a delicious dinner or relaxing cocktail. Note that there is a charge for wifi in the room.
Notes As of November 1 2012, City and regional taxes (usually in the range of 1-3 euros per person/night) will be collected by the hotel at checkout. Barcelona is a great place to visit. You can rent bikes to get around the city or stroll for miles. The shopping is amazing, as are the many museums and art galleries. The beaches are within walking distance and restaurants and bars are everywhere. This location is very close to a local market - the Boqueria - and well worth a visit.
