In the historical heart of Altafulla in Tarragona, is this ancient convent constructed in 1732 (Big Cloisters would be an approximate translation of the name). The skilfull restoration has saved many of the original features - the old balconies, the arches and original iron and woodwork - and the rooms have been decorated in the fresh, bright colours from which they have been named, Acero Dulce, Ocre Campo, Tierra Africa, Carbon Piedra. The bathrooms are wonderfully modern but use traditional materials in their decoration. The building has an interior courtyard, a swimming pool, terrace with solarium and jacuzzi and some vistas of the Mediterranean and the castles of Tamariz and Altafulla. The restaurant is in the old heart of the convent and offers a creative Mediterranean cuisine, with a special tasting menu of dishes from the region (price approx. 38-40 euros). If you wish to dine at the restaurant, it is important that you make a reservation in advance. It is a popular place and is usually full. The hotel has just completed an annex across from the main building with an additional nineteen rooms, restaurant and spa facilities.

Our Feedback
Rating: Excellent “Loved it! ” Rating: Excellent “Would not hesitate to return for another stay.
Thank them for us.” Rating: Excellent “terrific service, food and decor.” Rating: Good “Liked: It was in a small town within proximity to golf in Tarragona. Didn't Like: The check-in gentleman with a beard. Really unpleasant.” Rating: Average “They are vastly enlarging this hotel and the building work will continue for some time. They should offer discounts for this because you could not use the jacuzzi on the roof or the swimming pool (which was very small) because of dust & noise.
The breakfast for E12 was very poor and we chose to eat down the road at the local bakery. Restaurant menu was expensive and breakfast experience put us off so we ate at excellent local restaurants. The rooms were lovely & very stylish. Altafulla is still a gem of a original Spanish resort ~ we really loved it but wouldn't choose to stay at the Gran Claustre again.” Rating: Average “Liked: Not a lot...we only stayed one night instead of the 6 we had booked! We went straight back to the Paradore Aiguablava! Didn't Like: The hotel reception area was badly signed...the hotel is actually in 2 buildings. Waiting at the desk was like waiting in an office...the reception area and staff were unwelcoming. We were not offered help with our bags and did not realise the hotel does not have a garden area, just a small patch of grass and trees across the road, opposite a modern housing estate! Our bedroom looked onto it also, not very appealing! The pool was tiny and almost always in the shade, set in a first floor courtyard area, the roof terrace and spa were even smaller. Claustrophobic to say the least! The safe did not work and even the technician failed to repair it. There were no instructions or info about the hotel at all in the room and the staff were most unhelful when we enquired about the TV stations and internet access. We had booked for dinner on arrival, but the reservation was not passed onto the restaurant and we were refused in the most curt manner.Breakfast was poor and as we were the first to arrive in the restaurant at 8am, we were not offered any of the hot food yet to be prepared. The restaurant is clinical, minimal and unwelcoming.Over all, the hotel is hugely over rated and pretentious. ” Rating: Not Given “Unfortunately I had to cancel the reservation.”
