Where |
Northern Spain, in Asturias, inland from Gijon on the coast. The closest airport, Asturias/Oviedo (OVD), is 26 km/16 Miles NW of Oviedo. |
|
When |
Late spring and early Autumn are very pleasant times to visit in terms of the weather, although the city has enough historical attractions to visit any time of the year. |
|
Why |
The city was founded in the 8th century and is the capital of Asturias. It has a wonderful medieval flavour in the historic quarter, that has, in modern times, been sensitively planned making it a very accessible pedestrian-friendly historic centre. Oviedo is made up of interesting squares - the Cathedral square leads to the square of Alfonso II the Chaste, with the palaces of Valdecarzana and la Rúa. In Cimadevilla, the oldest part of the historic quarter, there is the unusual plaza de Trascorrales. There are many coloured houses surrounding the square, where you can enjoy sitting at a chigre (cider bar) to taste the local cider. The Romanesque Art here has World Heritage designation and the attractive coastline of the Costa Verde provides possibilities for all sorts of sports and hiking. |
