Introduction

Where

Girona is about an hour’s drive north of Barcelona (130 km.) in the region of Catalonia. Between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava.

When

During August, the temperature can reach as high as 40 degrees Celsius. In February it has been known to dip a couple of degrees below 0, although the average temperature for this time is usually 10 degrees Celsius. Spring and Fall are the most comfortable times to visit – and if you will be touring the coast take a lightweight jacket. The Girona Film Festival takes place in the second week of October; between 27 October and 5 November is the Girona Festival, and the first ten days of July are busy with the Festival of Religious Music of the World.

Why

Girona is the provincial capital, and is a delightful mix of very old and new – the most impressive feature being the mediaeval walled town on the east bank of the Onyar river. The old town is very pedestrian-friendly, with a vast Gothic cathedral (begun in 1292) at its centre. You can wander the cobbled streets inside the medieval walls for hours. A good way to view the old city is from the top of the walls. Girona has many fascinating museums including Spain’s only Cinema Museum, the City History Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Art Museum (inside the Episcopal Palace) and the Jewish History Museum. Be sure to visit other areas in the province, notably El Port de la Selva, with its monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes; the Cap de Creus Natural Park; the landscapes of Cadaqués and the gulf of Roses; historic-artistic sites like Pals; or walled towns beside the sea, like Tossa del Mar. The Begur and Aiguablava beaches are well worth a visit. The areas of the Eastern Pyrenees are also well worth seeing, with its the valleys, peaks and rivers, dotted with fascinating towns like Puigcerdá or Sant Joan de les Abadesses. The cuisine of the province is exceptional with products from the coast and inland combining to create some unique flavours.
