Son Granot

On the island of Menorca, this fascinating Georgian-style building, constructed between 1712 and 1756, was strategically placed for its proximity to the Puerto natural de Mahon. The house was built as the residence of the Scottish military engineer Patrick Mackellar, who, during the second British occupation (1763-1782) was appointed Chief Engineer of Menorca. Its more recent history is as a lovely small hotel with just nine rooms and a garden full of native trees and plants in a 5 hectare setting--a peaceful place to stay with spectacular sea views. Ownership of this inn changed in 2007, and it is now run by a family who are warm, friendly and very helpful. Since taking over, it has been named in the Michelin Guide as one of the thirty best Spanish hotels and the restaurant is recommended in the gourmet guide. The hotel has also received extensive coverage in the Spanish, British, French and Italian press. There is swimming pool on a terrace and a solarium. Son Granot has eight double rooms, five with sea views and the others looking onto the swimming pool, the garden and the rest of the estate. They all have individual bathrooms, air conditioning and heating, three background music channels, telephone, minibar, strongbox and satellite television. The rooms are furnished in the colonial style, in tune with the architectural style of the building. There is also a ninth room at Son Granot, an independent double room which has been specially adapted for disabled people. Enjoy breakfast on the terrace with its wonderful views. The rooms are air conditioned and have satellite television. The cuisine is typically Mediterranean, using local ingredients (dinner or lunch approximately 25 euros per person).
